The Diplomacy of the Pope………

Pope Francis recently completed a very high profile trip to Cuba and the United States.  Having played an integral role in the communication between the U.S. and Cuba in normalizing their relationship this visit was an extension of his diplomatic mission regarding the two countries.  The media coverage was extensive.  Short of living in a remote part of the world without any modern resources no doubt you have heard or seen coverage about his trip.  Leading up to and throughout his visit there have been much analysis on every word the Pope shared.  He was received in Cuba by Fidel Castro and in the U.S. at the White House by President Obama as any head of state would be received.  He was also received in both countries by over 1 million followers and members of the Catholic faith, many of which traveled from all over the world to be present for these historic events.

Though these messages were delivered in the U.S. and Cuba they apply and were shared throughout the world via every form of media available to man. The Pope had many messages during his highly publicized visit to Cuba and the U.S. and the recurring theme of those messages involved unity, tolerance, compassion, providing for the poor, inclusion and family as he reached to impact our human existence he also tailored those comments strategically to the audiences that were in attendance.  He clearly had enormous impact on not only the social and religious society; he had very significant impact on members of the government sector.  The U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Congressman John Boehner was so moved by the Pope’s comments as he addressed the U.S. Congress, he literally resigned from his leadership role the next morning.  This was an extraordinary shock to the U.S. political community and we will have to sit tight to realize the true fallout from such a major shift in government leadership.  The U.S. Speaker of the House is second inline to the Presidency of the United States; this will be no small shift in power and ideology. 

The Pope expressed concern over the family and it’s future as an institution to remain a focal point in society.  It is through the foundation of families, all families, that we can provide not only for our own families, and ourselves but how we can utilize the family foundation to share our resources with those less fortunate.  This is our duty to all humanity. 

What the Pope did not explicitly define in his address was a specific definition of what constitutes a family.  Throughout the world the reflection of a family can result in a multitude of images just as a mirror will reflect diverse images when multiple people are standing in its view. Anthony Fisher, the archbishop of Sydney, Australia reflected with these words on the Papal visit as he attended the events in the U.S., “I think it has been a message of his on several occasions, including when he addressed the U.S. bishops, about not always being in contest, not approaching family life always with a critique of what’s wrong with the world, the way families are in the world today.” When asked if he had heard much of a critique from the Pope about social issues including same-sex marriage, the archbishop said, “No. Well, he’s touched on them but very gently and he’s probably modeling what he is calling the bishops to, when he is saying to not be permanently in a posture of contest with our surrounding culture. That seems to be what he is proposing to us.”  If this is the case then why would Pope Francis make a comment to the press corps on his return flight to Rome that “the right to consciously object extends to public officials”?  There has been much speculation about the Pope’s motives, since after that comment it was released by Kim Davis and her Liberty Counsel attorneys that Kim and her husband were privy to a private meeting with the Pope where he expressed support for her position.  Apparently due to the promotion of Kim’s audience with the Pope the Vatican has finally been forced to comment.  The Vatican has indeed confirmed that Kim Davis met the Pope, but in a context of a receiving line with many others whom the Pope greeted.  Believe me when I say I have been privy to receiving lines with high level world wide leaders and I can assure you these are not private meetings!  It is completely embarrassing that the Vatican has had to endure such publicity on what was otherwise an extraordinary visit to the U.S.  The fact is the only “private” meeting the Pope held was with family members and a personal friend from his past in Argentina who happened to attend the meeting with his life partner of 19 years!  Yes my friends, the Pope did indeed have a private audience with a gay couple!  There is no doubt that same sex marriage is not perceived to be inline with some religious doctrine by those who practice and interpret the bible, however it is inline with the laws of virtually every westernized nation throughout the world including almost all of Europe and the majority of the western hemisphere.  So what can we interpret from the Pope’s message to his bishops about “not being in contest with our cultural surroundings?”

What I found more compelling was the Pope’s chosen words to his selective audiences than the words he chose not to say.  He chose to address, climate change, immigration and homelessness in front of the U.S. Congress knowing that there are members of Congress and current candidates for the U.S. Presidency who want to deport thousands of people and build walls around the United States, but he did so in a fashion of providing opportunity for discussion and resolution.  The Pope ate with the homeless and embraced the young.  He visited a prison where he told his audience, "Life means 'getting our feet dirty' from the dust-filled roads of life and history, all of us need to be cleansed, to be washed, and me in the first place."  His actions and words focused on opportunity and responsibility, not hate and division and blame.  Millions of people praised him for his words, but will millions embrace not only his words but also implement his examples? 

And last but not least he did not give thought to the arenas where we find conflict with each other and our beliefs but instead reached for common ground and insight on finding resolutions in arenas where we share commonality.  No one person is going to agree 100% with any leaders views, for the world is comprised of diversity and cultural differences making this virtually impossible.  But what every one of us can do is identify with some segment of the Pope’s message that will allow us as a human race to find cause for progress.  This is what any head of state or religious leader should do when lending their thoughts to the……. diplomacy of the Pope.

El papa Francisco completó recientemente un viaje de muy alto perfil a Cuba y Estados Unidos. Después de haber desempeñado un papel integral en la comunicación entre EE.UU. y Cuba en la normalización de sus relaciones, esta visita fue una extensión de su misión diplomática en relación con los dos países. La cobertura de los medios fue amplia. Al no vivir en una parte remota del mundo sin ningún tipo de medios modernos, indudablemente usted pudo haber escuchado o visto la cobertura de su viaje. Antes y durante su visita se han producido muchos análisis sobre las palabras compartidas por el Papa. Fue recibido en Cuba por Fidel Castro y, en EE.UU. en la Casa Blanca, por el presidente Obama, como sería recibido cualquier jefe de Estado. También fue recibido en ambos países por más de un millón de seguidores y miembros de la fe católica, muchos de los cuales viajaron desde lugares de todo el mundo para estar presentes en estos acontecimientos históricos.

Aunque estos mensajes fueron emitidos en EE.UU. y Cuba, son aplicables y fueron compartidos por todo el mundo mediante todas las formas de comunicación disponibles. El Papa tenía muchos mensajes en su muy divulgada visita a Cuba y EE.UU., y el tema recurrente de esos mensajes se relacionaban con la unidad, la tolerancia, la compasión, la ayuda a los pobres, la inclusión y la familia, y cuando trató de impactar a nuestra humanidad también adaptó esos comentarios estratégicamente a los presentes. Tuvo claramente un enorme impacto no solo en la comunidad social y religiosa; tuvo un impacto muy significativo en los miembros del sector gubernamental. El Presidente de la Cámara de Representantes del Congreso de Estados Unidos, John Boehner, se conmovió tanto por los comentarios del Papa al dirigirse al Congreso de Estados Unidos, que, literalmente, renunció a su papel de liderazgo a la mañana siguiente. Fue esta una sacudida extraordinaria para la comunidad política de Estados Unidos, la cual tendrá que calmarse para asimilar las verdaderas consecuencias de un cambio tan importante en el liderazgo del Gobierno. El presidente de la Cámara de Estados Unidos es el segundo en la línea de la Presidencia de Estados Unidos; no será este un cambio menor en el poder y la ideología.

El Papa expresó su preocupación por la familia y su futuro como institución para que siga siendo un punto focal en la sociedad. Es a través de la creación de la familia, de todas las familias, que podemos proveerle no sólo a nuestras propias familias y a nosotros mismos, sino la forma en que podemos utilizar la base familiar para compartir nuestros recursos con los menos afortunados. Este es nuestro deber hacia toda la humanidad.

Lo que el Papa no abordó explícitamente en su discurso fue una definición concreta de lo que constituye una familia. En todo el mundo el reflejo de una familia puede dar lugar a una multitud de imágenes, tal como un espejo refleja diversas imágenes cuando varias personas están paradas frente al mismo. Anthony Fisher, el arzobispo de Sydney, Australia, reflejó con estas palabras sobre la visita del Papa como participante en los eventos en EE.UU.: “Creo que ha sido su mensaje en varias ocasiones, incluso cuando se dirigió a los obispos de Estados Unidos, no estar siempre en una disputa, no acercarse a la vida familiar siempre con una crítica de lo que anda mal en el mundo, la forma en que está la familia en el mundo de hoy”. Cuando se le preguntó si había oído alguna crítica del Papa a los problemas sociales, como el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo, dijo el arzobispo: “No. Bueno, él se ha referido a eso, pero muy levemente, y probablemente está modelando lo que él le está pidiendo hacer a los obispos cuando les está diciendo que no estén permanentemente en una postura de pugna con nuestra cultura circundante. Eso parece ser lo que él nos está proponiendo”. Si este es el caso, entonces, ¿por qué el papa Francisco haría el comentario a la prensa en su vuelo de regreso a Roma, que “el derecho a objetar conscientemente se extiende a los funcionarios públicos”?

Ha habido mucha especulación acerca de las intenciones del Papa ya que después de ese comentario Kim Davis y sus abogados de "Liberty Counsel" dijeron que el Papa tuvo un encuentro privado con Davis y su esposo en que les expresó su apoyo. Aparentemente, dada la promoción que sus abogados le estaban dando a la supuesta reunión entre el Papa y Davis, el Vaticano tuvo que comentar. El Vaticano confirmó que Kim Davis conoció al Papa, pero en el contexto de una línea de recepción con muchas otras personas que el Papa saludó. Sé lo que es una línea de recepción con dignatarios y les puedo asegurar que no es lo mismo que una reunión privada! Es completamente embarazoso que el Vaticano tenga que enfrentar este tipo de publicidad sobre un viaje papal extraordinario a EE.UU. La realidad es que la única reunión "privada" que el Papa tuvo fue con un amigo personal de su pasado en Argentina quien vino acompañado de su familia y su novio de 19 años. Si, mis amigos, el Papa tuvo una audiencia privada con una pareja gay!

No hay duda de que el matrimonio de personas del mismo sexo no se percibe en línea con alguna doctrina religiosa por los que practican e interpretan la Biblia, sin embargo, está en línea con las leyes de prácticamente todos los países occidentalizados en todo el mundo, incluyendo casi toda Europa y la mayor parte del hemisferio occidental. Entonces, ¿cómo podemos interpretar del mensaje del Papa a sus obispos sobre “no estar en pugna con nuestro entorno cultural?”

Lo que me pareció más convincente fueron las palabras escogidas por el Papa para sus públicos selectivos, que las palabras que prefirió no decir. Eligió abordar el cambio climático, la inmigración y la falta de viviendas ante el Congreso de Estados Unidos sabiendo que hay miembros del Congreso y actuales candidatos a la Presidencia de Estados Unidos que quieren deportar a miles de personas y construir muros alrededor de Estados Unidos, pero lo hizo de una manera que propicia oportunidades para la discusión y la búsqueda de soluciones. El Papa comió con personas sin techo y abrazó a los jóvenes. Visitó una prisión, donde le dijo a los presentes que “la vida significa ensuciarnos los pies en los caminos polvorientos de la vida y de la historia; todos nosotros necesitamos limpiarnos, ser lavados, y yo, en primer lugar”. Sus acciones y palabras se centraron en la oportunidad y la responsabilidad, no en el odio y la división y la culpa. Millones de personas lo elogiaron por sus palabras, pero, ¿acogerán millones no sólo sus palabras, sino que pondrán en práctica sus ejemplos?

Y por último, pero no menos importante, él no pensó en las áreas donde nos estamos en conflicto nosotros mismos y nuestras creencias, sino que procuró el territorio y la visión común en la búsqueda de acuerdo en los ámbitos en que compartimos. Nadie va a estar de acuerdo ciento por ciento con los puntos de vista de ningún líder, porque el mundo se compone de diversidad y diferencias culturales que hacen de esto algo prácticamente imposible. Pero lo que cada uno de nosotros puede hacer es identificarse con algún segmento del mensaje del Papa que nos permita como raza humana encontrar el motivo para avanzar. Esto es lo que cualquier jefe de Estado o líder religioso debe hacer se ponga a pensar ....... en la diplomacia del Papa.

Same Sex Marriage or Simply…….Marriage! Matrimonio del mismo sexo o simplemente…Matrimonio! (Traducción al español por debajo)

The United States Supreme Court on June 26^th by an opinion of 5 to 4 ruled that all States and Territories of the Untied States must allow the same legal status of marriage to all two consenting adults who wish to engage in a legal union.  The States and Territories must provide the same legal path and recognition to all couples that apply for this legal status regardless of sex, color of skin, socieo-economic status, employment etc.  The ruling has sparked a litany of opinions on both sides of the subject around the world.

When a government body allows certain citizens specific privileges not obtainable to all its citizens equally, then that government specifically discriminates and marginalizes the group to whom it is denying those privileges.  Regardless of the excuse a government, institution, or individual member of society uses to provide certain legal status to some people while denying it to others, such a practice results in discrimination, bigotry, and marginalization.  In the case of marriage, many within the Christian community of the United States have used their interpretation of the bible to justify their hate and lack of consideration for the equality of all people.  True democracies cannot exist without true equality and the same legal protections for all.  This is the foundation of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding marriage.  The foundation of our Republic is that democracy, while providing for the will of the people to govern all, will not allow the tyranny of the majority to oppress the rights of the minority, and that is precisely the reason we have a Bill of Rights in the United States.

Most recently in the Hoy newspaper Rafael Acevedo indicated through his opinion that “The powers that control U.S. policy seem to have forgotten that his and all modern western democracies are based in Christianity.”  Unfortunately Mr. Acevedo is completely off base, for the United States of America is founded in a very clear separation of church and state.  In fact, when John Adams served as the second President of the United States in 1797, he signed the Treaty of Tripoli into law after it  was unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate, which read in part:  "As the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”

Throughout our history, our leaders from every branch of government have continued to remind us of the foundation of our equality for all people.   On September 12, 1960, in an address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, President John F. Kennedy stated, “I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute--where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote--where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference--and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.”

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...."  This is our freedom of religion, meaning we have the legal right and freedom in the United States of America to worship freely as we choose, that our government cannot rule or dictate how we pray or for that matter not pray if we choose.  One of the primary reasons our founding fathers fled England was due to the fact the King forced his own religious beliefs upon those he governed and they did not have the right to worship or not worship freely.  This is the very reason for the First Amendment to our U.S. Constitution. 

You are certainly entitled to your opinion in regard to marriage.  You may feel marriage should only be reserved for certain members of society as dictated by your beliefs.  However you don’t have the luxury of pretending that you are accepting and loving of all people when you believe it is acceptable to provide some members of society with certain rights and privileges while denying those same rights and privileges to other members of society.  In the United States the legal right to be married is granted by the authority of the state, it is not granted by the authority of the church.  When one is legally married in the United States and pronounced married by the sanctioned representative of the state, the pronouncement reads “By the authority vested in me by the state of”.  You may conduct a marriage ceremony in a church if you choose, but you are married by the state, and a church ceremony is not required to have your marriage legally recognized by the state.  Therefore, the Supreme Court of the United States did not in any way place a burden on any church or religious institution by ruling that marriage is a right to all citizens and not just a determined few.  The decision in no way requires churches or religious institutions to conduct marriage ceremonies for anyone other than whom they choose.  Therefore all churches and religious institutions in the United States may carry forward the tradition of providing marriage ceremonies to its memberships without any reservation or infliction of repercussion from the government of the United States.

The opinions of the U.S. Supreme court in regard to marriage are based in legal opinion, and that legal opinion arises from the framework our founding fathers implemented when our country was formed.  Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy in his opinion wrote: “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family.  In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.  As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death.  It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage.  Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves.  Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.  They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law.  The Constitution grants them that right.”

When two human beings decide to enter into a legal and binding contractual relationship sanctioned by the government for the purposes of solidifying and substantiating their commitment to each other, then there is only one way to describe it equally for all those who enter into such an arrangement and that is “marriage.” Therefore it is not a same-sex marriage, it is not an opposite-sex marriage, and it is not an interracial marriage.  The bottom line:  it is a marriage……period.

El 26 de junio la Suprema Corte de los Estados Unidos falló en un voto de 5-4 que todos los estados y territorios de los Estados Unidos deben permitir el mismo estatus de matrimonio a toda pareja de adultos que por decisión libre quieran obtener una unión legal. Estos estados y territorios deben proporcionar el mismo camino legal y reconocimiento a todas las parejas que soliciten para esta situación jurídica sin distinción de sexo, color de piel, estado socio-económico, empleo, etc. Este dictamen ha provocado vastas opiniones a nivel mundial, de ambos lados del espectro.

Cuando un organismo gubernamental permite que ciertos ciudadanos tengan privilegios específicos que no son obtenibles por todos los ciudadanos de igual manera, entonces ese gobierno específicamente discrimina y marginaliza al grupo al que le niega los mismos privilegios. Independientemente de la excusa que un gobierno, una institución o un miembro individual de la sociedad use para proveer cierto estatus legal a algunas personas mientras se lo niega a otras, el resultado es discriminación, intolerancia y marginalización. En cuanto al matrimonio, muchos dentro de la comunidad Cristiana de los Estados Unidos han utilizado su interpretación de la Biblia para justificar su odio y falta de consideración por la igualdad de todas las personas. Las democracias verdaderas no pueden existir sin la igualdad y las mismas protecciones legales de todo su pueblo. Este es el fundamento de las opiniones de la reciente decisión de la Corte Suprema de Estados Unidos con respecto al matrimonio. La fundación de la República no puede significar que la democracia puede permitir la tiranía de la mayoría para oprimir los derechos de la minoría y esa es precisamente la razón por la que tenemos una Declaración de Derechos (Bill of Rights) en los Estados Unidos.

Recientemente en el periódico Hoy de la República Dominicana, Rafael Acevedo opinó que “Los poderes que controlan la política del EUA parecen haber olvidado que la suya y todas las democracias occidentales modernas tienen su fundamento en el cristianismo”. Desafortunadamente el Sr. Acevedo está equivocado ya que los Estados Unidos de América está fundado en una clara separación de la iglesia del Estado. De hecho, John Adams, cuando gobernó como segundo presidente de los Estrados Unidos en el 1797, convirtió el Tratado de Trípoli en ley que el Senado aprobó por unanimidad y que en parte leía: “A medida que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos no es, en ningún sentido, fundado en la religión Cristiana.”

A través de nuestra historia, nuestros líderes de cada rama del gobierno han continuado recordándonos del fundamento de nuestra igualdad para todas las personas. El 12 de septiembre de 1960, en un discurso ante la Gran Asociación Ministerial de Houston, el Presidente John F. Kennedy declaró: “Creo en una América donde la separación de la Iglesia y el Estado es absoluta – donde ningún prelado Católico pueda decirle al Presidente (aunque sea Católico) cómo actuar, y donde ningún ministro protestante le diga a sus feligreses por quien votar—donde a ninguna iglesia o escuela de la iglesia le sean concedidos fondos públicos o preferencia política—y donde a nadie se le niegue un cargo público meramente porque su religión difiera a la del Presidente que lo pueda nombrar o las personas que lo puedan elegir.”

La Primera Enmienda de la Constitución de Estados Unidos dice: "El Congreso no hará ninguna ley respecto al establecimiento de religión o para prohibir el ejercicio libre de la misma ...." Esta es nuestra libertad de culto, lo que significa que tenemos el derecho legal y la libertad en los Estados Unidos de América a adorar libremente como queremos. Esto significa que nuestro gobierno no puede dictar cómo debemos orar o decirnos lo que debemos creer. Una de las razones principales por la cual nuestros padres fundadores huyeron de Inglaterra fue que el rey impuso sus creencias religiosas personales al pueblo y ellos no tenían el derecho de adorar o no adorar libremente. Esta es la razón por la cual existe la Primera Enmienda de nuestra Constitución de Estados Unidos.

Sin duda, usted tiene derecho a su opinión con respecto al matrimonio. Usted puede opinar que el matrimonio sólo debe ser para ciertos miembros de la sociedad según sus creencias. Sin embargo, usted no tiene el lujo de pretender que está aceptando y amando a todas las personas cuando cree que es aceptable que algunos tengan ciertos derechos y privilegios al mismo tiempo que se les niegan esos mismos derechos y privilegios a otros miembros de la sociedad. En los Estados Unidos, el derecho legal para casarse es otorgado por la autoridad del Estado, y no por la autoridad de la iglesia. Cuando uno se casa legalmente en los Estados Unidos por el representante autorizado del Estado, el pronunciamiento dice "Por la autoridad investida en mí por el estado de…". Es posible llevar a cabo una ceremonia de matrimonio en una iglesia, si lo desea, pero usted se casa por el estado y una ceremonia de la iglesia no es obligatoria para que el estado reconozca legalmente su matrimonio. Por lo tanto, la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos no le obligó nada a ninguna iglesia o institución religiosa con el fallo del 26 de junio cuando decidieron que el matrimonio es un derecho para todos los ciudadanos. La decisión de ninguna manera requiere que iglesias o instituciones religiosas lleven a cabo ceremonias de matrimonio gay. En la formación de una unión matrimonial, dos personas se convierten en algo más grande que antes estaban. Como algunos de los peticionarios en estos casos demuestran, el matrimonio representa un amor que puede durar hasta después de la muerte. Sería malentender a estos hombres y mujeres si decimos que difaman la idea del matrimonio. Su motivo es que ellos lo respetan, lo respetan tan profundamente que tratan de encontrar su cumplimiento por sí mismos. No se puede condenar su esperanza a vivir en soledad, excluidos de una de las instituciones más antiguas de la civilización. Piden igual dignidad a los ojos de la ley. La Constitución les otorga ese derecho ".

Cuando dos seres humanos deciden entrar en una relación legal permanente y contractual, sancionada por el gobierno con el fin de consolidar su compromiso con el otro, entonces sólo hay una palabra que se puede usar para todos los que entran en dicho acuerdo: "matrimonio". Por lo tanto, no es un matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo y no es un matrimonio interracial. Es un matrimonio ...... ¡y punto!

The Creativity of God La Creatividad de Dios (Español Incluido)

Today I was at the gym putting myself through yet another hour of misery with my personal trainer and my mind began to question why was I doing this?  I will admit I don’t really enjoy working out, as I never have experienced that endorphin rush so many people talk about after exercising.  As my thoughts began to run a bit deeper and I began to take notice of all the diversity around me, the different shapes, sizes, heights, colors and nationalities, as everyone was moving about their day I began to think about the creativity of God.  I do believe in God, I do believe there is more to our existence than our earthly experience. 

Most of us experience at some point in our lives religious teaching.  In the teachings I received it was expressed that God was all good and all loving.  I learned that everyone is a child of God and that God loves everyone.  I was taught that God never made mistakes and could do no wrong.  So I have to wonder if this is the teaching of God then why are so many in the world who profess to love God and have a relationship with God judging his work so critically?

I noticed that everyone around me was uniquely different.  And unfortunately in our world today we humans make constant judgments of one another based on our internal and external differences.  We judge people who are shorter than us, taller than us, different nationalities and different colors than us and who love differently than us.  We judge based on basically every internal and external distinguishing factor we can see or interpret.  These judgments are not only discriminatory and marginalizing but they are a judgmental critique of God’s work.  If we truly believe God is all good and God loves all people then the moment we hold others up in a negative light we are actually holding that person up to God and saying……this creation was no good!  We are actually judging God!  We are saying you made a mistake with this person.  I don’t know about you, but as for me based on my religious teachings I am more inclined to agree with the beauty and creativity of God than negatively judge his creations as if I know better. 

Human beings are different for a reason and through those differences there are many lessons to be learned and many experiences to be had, we only have to free our minds of judgment and insecurity and embrace each other for our beautiful differences.  Nothing is ever resolved through judgment, but opportunity is created through open mindedness and embracing each other for what we uniquely bring to life.  Before negatively responding to someone or ridiculing another human being for a distinguishing trait God gave them, try seeing the beauty in those differences first and embrace the creativity of God.

Hoy estuve en el gimnasio poniendome bajo una hora de miseria con mi entrenador personal y mi mente comenzó a preguntarse ¿por qué estaba haciendo esto? Debo admitir que no me gusta mucho hacer ejercicio, ya que nunca he experimentado esa subida de endorfinas de la cual mucha gente habla después de hacer ejercicio. A medida que mis pensamientos comenzaron a volverse un poco mas profundos  fue cuando comence a notar toda la diversidad a mi alrededor, los diferentes formas, tamaños, alturas, colores y nacionalidades, mientras todo el mundo seguía su rutina del día; me puse a pensar en la creatividad de Dios . Yo creo en Dios, creo que hay más en nuestra existencia que nuestra experiencia terrenal.

La mayoría de nosotros experimentamos en algún momento de nuestras vidas una enseñanza religiosa. En las enseñanzas que recibí se me expresó que Dios era todo lo bueno y todo amor. Me enteré que somos hijos de Dios y que Dios nos ama a todos. Me enseñaron que Dios nunca cometió errores y que no podía equivocarse. Así que tengo que preguntarme; si esto es la enseñanza de Dios, entonces ¿por qué tantas personas en el mundo que profesan amar  y tener una relación con Dios juzgan su trabajo de forma tan crítica?

Me di cuenta de que todo el que me rodeaba era único y diferente. Y por desgracia, en nuestro mundo de hoy nosotros los seres humanos hacemos juicios constantes  unos a otros sobre nuestras diferencias internas y externas. Juzgamos a las personas con menor estatura que nosotros, más altos, de diferentes nacionalidades, de diferentes colores y a los que aman de manera diferente a nosotros. Juzgamos basandonos básicamente en cada factor distintivo interno y externo que podemos ver o interpretar. Estos juicios no son solamente discriminatorios y marginales son una crítica a la obra de Dios. Si realmente creemos que Dios es todo lo bueno y Dios ama a todas las personas, entonces en el momento en que sostenemos a otros de forma negativa estamos sosteniendo a esa persona ante Dios y diciendole ...... esta creación no es buena! En realidad, estamos juzgando a Dios! Estamos diciendo que cometió un error con esa persona. Yo no sé ustedes, pero yo basándome en mis enseñanzas religiosas me inclino a estar de acuerdo con la belleza y la creatividad de Dios, que a juzgar negativamente sus creaciones como si yo supiera mas que  él.

Los seres humanos son diferentes por una razón y a través de esas diferencias hay muchas lecciones que aprender y muchas experiencias que adquirir, sólo tenemos que liberar nuestras mentes del juicio e inseguridad y abrazarnos unos a los otros por nuestras hermosas diferencias. Nada se resuelve a través del mal juicio, pero las oportunidades se crean para tener la mente abierta  y abrazarnos unos a los otros por lo que traemos de forma única a la vida. Antes de responder negativamente a alguien o ridiculizarlo por algún rasgo distintivo que Dios les dio, trata de ver primero la belleza en esas diferencias y abraza la creatividad de Dios.

Je Suis Charlie or Je ne suis pas Charlie? (Español Incluido)

In recent days, we the world have suffered yet another horrific attack on mankind.  The journalists of Charlie Hebdo in Paris enlightened the world to a point of view not everyone or every culture agreed with but their voices expressed through the medium of journalism are the very foundation of democracy.  Freedom of speech is a common ideal promoted in the democratic world but as we learned a few days ago there is a severe price to be paid for that freedom.  At what cost does freedom ring?

History has shown that freedom is paid for with the blood of our beings.  Conflicts, fights, wars and terrorism have taken the lives of many men and women, and at the end of the day they all had one thing in common….they lost their lives!  Humanity has yet to place an attainable value on the human soul, a calculated replacement or opportunity cost of one’s life, so therefore I ask what is the price of freedom?  What is the price paid for an ideal that by definition indicates without cost?  When modern nations allow heinous acts to go unaddressed, when modern nations do not create an environment where all it’s people can live with dignity, respect and equality without marginalization and in fear of speaking and expressing their opinions and lives freely then democracy trembles and the price is paid.  If any democratic nation wishes to remain relevant in the world of democracy and wishes to have their laws and customs respected, then they too must in turn move forward progressively by respecting and recognizing the laws of their partner countries that provide the freedoms to it’s citizens on which democracy is built. The foundation of our diplomatic ties must be equal to our commitment of a free and open society and when our diplomatic partners waiver it is our duty to communicate the disfavor of their offense.  You cannot be an open and transparent democracy without the ability to provide your citizens with the security of free and open dialogue.  The expression of our speech openly and without cost is the very core of a democratic government and should be cultivated and encouraged.  When we lack participation from all segments of society this contributes to the dissipation of democracy.

I am truly shocked that in recent days there have been attempts by a few to find fault with the victims.  Some people have indicated that the accountability of offensive speech is retaliation.  The written word is an appropriate retaliation or a pointed interview, however to respond to the written word, the freedom of expression or an editorial with the violent act of calculated murder is beyond heinous.  We will never all agree with each other’s positions on every subject.  Those disagreements are what creates dialogue and generates ideas and growth and should be embraced not ridiculed.  It is our duty to present our differences, to present alternative approaches and options for future generations.  The creation of change is our only path forward for a more cohesive and unified world.

Je Suis Charlie is not about agreeing with the content of Charlie Hebdo or one’s political positions or expressive voice. Je Suis Charlie is showing solidarity with the foundation of democracy, that being freedom of speech and expression, no matter how significant or insignificant the content may be, a person, entity or any government should never silence our opinions or ideas.  Even if you feel a voice or opinion has no substance or relevance or even if you find one’s speech offensive, nobody should die for the opinions or expression of their speech!

Therefore.... Je Suis Charlie!

En los últimos días, el mundo ha sufrido otro ataque devastador contra la humanidad. Los periodistas de Charlie Hebdo en París alumbraron el mundo con un punto de vista con el cual no todo el mundo o todas las culturas estaban de acuerdo, pero con sus voces y opiniones expresadas por medio del periodismo son el fundamento esencial de la democracia. La libertad de expresión es un ideal común promovido en el mundo democrático, pero como pudimos vivir recientemente, esta claro que todavia hay un alto precio a pagar por esa libertad. Entonces, ¿Cual es el verdadero precio de la libertad?

La historia ha demostrado que la libertad se paga con la sangre de nuestros seres. Los conflictos, peleas, guerras y el terrorismo han cobrado la vida de muchos hombres y mujeres, y al final del día todos ellos tenían una cosa en común .... perdieron sus vidas! La humanidad todavía tiene que otorgarle un posible valor al alma humana, un reemplazo o costo de oportunidad calculado de la propia vida, por lo que, por tanto, me pregunto cual es el precio de la libertad? ¿Cuál es el precio a pagar por un ideal que, por definición, no tiene costo? Cuándo naciones modernas permiten actos atroces que no se abordan, cuando las naciones modernas no crean un ambiente donde todas las personas puedan vivir con la dignidad, el respeto y la igualdad sin marginación y con el temor de hablar y expresar sus opiniones y vidas libremente, entonces la democracia tiembla y el precio se paga. Si cualquier nación democrática quiere seguir siendo relevante en el mundo de la democracia y quiere que los demás respeten sus leyes y costumbres, entonces ellos también deben a su vez avanzar progresivamente por el respeto y el reconocimiento de las leyes de sus países aliados ,que proporcionan las libertades de sus ciudadanos en el que la democracia se construye. La base de nuestras relaciones diplomáticas debe ser igual a nuestro compromiso de una sociedad libre y abierta, y cuando nuestros socios diplomáticos renuncian a ello, es nuestro deber comunicar la desaprobación de dicho delito. No se puede tener una democracia abierta y transparente, sin la capacidad de proporcionar a sus ciudadanos con la seguridad del diálogo libre y abierto. La expresión de nuestra forma de hablar abiertamente y sin costo es la esencia misma de un gobierno democrático, y por ende, debe ser cultivada y promovida. Cuando nos falta la participación de todos los segmentos de la sociedad esto contribuye a la disipación de la democracia.

Estoy realmente indignado de que en los últimos días ha habido intentos por parte de algunos en encontrar fallos con las víctimas. Algunas personas han indicado que la rendición de cuentas sobre libre expresión ofensiva es represalia. Un editorial seria una represalia apropiada o una entrevista en especifico, sin embargo para responder a las palabras escritas, la libertad de expresión o un editorial con el acto violento de asesinato calculado es algo atroz. Nunca vamos a estar todos de acuerdo con las posiciones de cada uno sobre todos los temas. Aquellos desacuerdos son lo que crean un diálogo y generan las ideas y crecimiento y estos deben ser abrazados, no ridiculizados. Es nuestro deber presentar nuestras diferencias, presentar enfoques alternativos y opciones para las generaciones futuras. La creación de cambio es nuestro único camino a seguir para un mundo más coherente y unificado.

Je Suis Charlie no se trata de estar de acuerdo con el contenido de Charlie Hebdo o de una posición política o voz expresiva. Je Suis Charlie es mostrar solidaridad con el fundamento de la democracia, siendo esto la libertad de palabra y de expresión, no importa que tan importante o insignificante el contenido pueda ser, una persona, entidad o cualquier gobierno nunca debería silenciar nuestras opiniones o ideas. Incluso si usted siente que una voz u opinión no tiene sustancia o relevancia, o incluso si usted encuentra ofensivo algún discurso, nadie debería morir por las opiniones o expresión de su discurso!

Governed or Controlled………(Español Incluido)

I have been observing the conflicts around the world and as a result of my unique position to view international policy I have to ask many questions about the intention of the legislative process worldwide.  There is an extraordinary amount of hot button issues and conflicts in the world today.  There are wars, there are social conflicts, there are cultural and religious conflicts, and there are more legal conflicts than one can count.  Our governments through executive policy, foreign policy and the legislative process attempts to resolve challenges and conflicts by governing, but at times I can’t help but observe that it is not always the intent to govern but rather to control.  What is the difference between governing and controlling and are they really that separate? 

I am privileged to be born in the United States, in a country where Democracy and the democratic process is the foundation of our government.  I am an open minded individual and I have traveled to over fifty countries in my adult life.  I have studied various forms of governments and the political process and it is my belief that humans are best when they live in a free and open society that provides a path for their voices and choices to be heard and unrestricted.  Unfortunately not all countries and world leaders feel the same and not all populations have the opportunity and freedoms to express themselves freely.  This leaves us without sovereignty over our personal decision-making process and subsequently results in us being in a position of being controlled and not governed.  Without personal sovereignty there cannot be Democracy.  When governments choose through the legislative process or executive order to exert control over our individual right to our personal lives, choices and decisions…….Democracy fails!  When individuals exert their voices openly without influence or restriction of the state, church or other external pressures then and only then can Democracy flourish for all people. 

History has proven that when governments govern, providing paths of protection from outside aggressors, providing rules and organized processes that promote the expansion of economic opportunity and develop systems that incorporate the influence of the individual then we all succeed collectively.  However, when government extends its influence over our personal sovereignty then society develops discord and individuals resist.  At times this results in a much greater dynamic than a simple protest, it can and at times results in conflicts and even wars!  When government over reaches……people die.  First and foremost we are individuals with basic human rights and dignities that should not be impeded by government or outside sources.  We are all created equal not only in the eyes of the law but also in the image of God.  It is the job of governments to protect those basic human rights, to protect our individual sovereignty not only from outside sources but also from government itself.  Laws that restrict any segment of the population or laws that lack support for basic human equality are not about its intention to govern but it’s intention to control.

Democracy requires the participation of its people individually and works best when everyone participates fully.  Unfortunately we allow others to speak for us at times and as a result control our individual sovereignty, our individual basic right as a human being.  Regardless of the type of government that governs where you live every individual has a voice.  Every voice must be heard.  Every opportunity to participate in the governing process must be exercised, otherwise you submit to the control of others.  Democracy allows for your individual participation but it is your responsibility to participate.  LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!  Use your vote, use your influence as a sovereign individual and above all, use your voice.

Do not be Controlled……be Governed!

¿Gobernados o controlados?

He estado observando los conflictos en todo el mundo y como resultado de mi posición única para ver la política internacional que tengo que hacer muchas preguntas acerca de la intención del proceso legislativo en todo el mundo. Hay una cantidad extraordinaria de problemas y conflictos candentes en todo el mundo hoy. Hay guerras, hay conflictos sociales, culturales y religiosos, y hay más conflictos jurídicos de lo que se puede contar. Nuestros gobiernos a través de la política ejecutiva, política exterior y procesos legislativos tratan de resolver problemas y conflictos para gobernar, pero a veces no puedo dejar de señalar que la intención no es siempre de gobernar, sino de controlar. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre gobernar y controlar? ¿Son realmente tan diferentes?

Nací en los Estados Unidos, un país donde la democracia y el proceso democrático son la base de nuestro gobierno. Soy una persona de mente abierta y he viajado a más de cincuenta países en mi vida. He estudiado diversas formas de gobiernos y procesos políticos y es mi creencia de que los seres humanos son mejor cuando viven en una sociedad libre y abierta que proporciona un camino para que sus voces y las opciones que se escuchen sin restricciones. Desafortunadamente, no todos los países y líderes mundiales se sienten igual y no todas las poblaciones tienen la oportunidad y libertades para expresarse libremente. Esto nos deja sin soberanía sobre nuestro proceso de toma de decisiones personales y, posteriormente, se traduce en que estemos en condiciones de ser controlados y no gobernados. Sin soberanía personal no puede haber democracia. Cuando los gobiernos optan por el proceso legislativo o decreto a ejercer control sobre nuestro derecho individual a nuestras vidas personales, elecciones y decisiones, la democracia falla. Cuando los individuos ejercen sus voces abiertamente sin influencia o restricción del estado, iglesia u otras presiones externas entonces y sólo entonces puede florecer la democracia para todos.

La historia ha demostrado que cuando el estado gobierna proporcionando caminos de la protección de los agresores externos, proporcionando normas y procesos organizados que promueven la expansión de las oportunidades económicas y desarrollan sistemas que incorporan la influencia del individuo, todos tenemos éxito colectivo. Sin embargo, cuando el gobierno extiende su influencia sobre nuestra soberanía personal, la sociedad desarrolla discordia y la población se resiste. A veces esto se traduce en una mayor dinámica que una simple protesta, que puede dar lugar a conflictos e incluso guerras. Cuando el gobierno se excede en extender sus influencias, la gente muere. Ante todo somos personas con derechos humanos y dignidades básicas que no debe impedirse con fuentes internas del gobierno o externas. Todos hemos sido creados iguales, no sólo a los ojos de la ley, sino también a la imagen de Dios. Es el trabajo de los gobiernos para proteger esos derechos humanos básicos, para proteger nuestra soberanía individual, no sólo de fuentes externas, sino también desde el propio gobierno. Las leyes que restringen cualquier segmento de la población o de las leyes que carecen de apoyo a la igualdad humana básica no son acerca de su intención de gobernar pero es intención de controlar.

La democracia requiere la participación de su pueblo individual y funciona mejor cuando todos participan plenamente. Desafortunadamente, permitimos que otros hablen por nosotros y como resultado controlan nuestra soberanía individual, nuestro derecho básico individual como seres humanos. Sin importar el tipo de gobierno, cada persona tiene una voz y cada voz debe ser escuchada. Participa en cada oportunidad que tengas en el proceso de gobierno. De lo contrario, te dejas ser controlado por los demás. La democracia permite su participación individual, pero es tu responsabilidad de participar. ¡DEJA QUE TU VOZ SEA ESCUCHADA! Utiliza tu voto. Utiliza tu influencia como individuo soberano y, sobre todo, utiliza tu voz.

¡Sé gobernado! ¡No dejes que te controlen! 

FREEDOM: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of………50!

It has been an interesting year in respect that I have had a large number of friends who have reached the age of 50!  Some celebrated in grand style and others simply let the day pass as a moment in time.  As each of my friends have reached this milestone in life I began to notice a common embrace among them, they appear to be more relaxed in guiding their own thoughts and not dramatically concerned or hung up on the opinions of others.  It is an amazing freedom when one is not chasing life but instead embracing life as if understanding that life itself will move forward in either instance.  There seems to be an epiphany upon experiencing this life’s milestone when they develop the true freedom to be comfortable in their own skin.

Practically all of my friends crossing this path in life have children, some opposite sex couples and some same sex couples.  I remember being a teenager and thinking WOW 50 years old! How could anyone live that long?  As a young man in my 20’s my thought process shifted to a lack of understanding that anyone over the age of 30 had any purpose, after all once you reach 30, life is simply about work and no play.  Fortunately, I was able to reach the fine old age of 30 and realized I was horribly misguided in my 20’s and as a 30 something began to realize that people in their 40’s and 50’s were actually pretty cool, very insightful and a lot more fun to be around than me as a misguided 20 year old.  Most of my friends during my 30’s were just beginning to get married, though I was in a relationship unfortunately at the time marriage was not a legal process in which we could engage.  This was a huge generational change than that of the generation of my parents and grandparents.  After all my parents were actually parents as teenagers and so were my grandparents, and my parents were grandparents in their 30’s! 

My generation of 30 something’s seemed to be way behind schedule but none the less life powered ahead.  In the approach to 40 many of my generation, some married and some not married began having children, some in their 30’s and some in their 40’s, after all this was a new generation of 30 something’s and they were not going to be held to a pre-historic schedule set forth by the previous generation.  They were also not about to wear the title “older parents” after all most of them did not have too because the pre-K classrooms were filled with children whose parents were in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s!  So I wondered what was driving this change in people holding off marriage and children until a more mature time in their life?  Was social media driving the shift? Was economics a motivating factor? Were medical advancements a trigger?  I am not certain that this was a combination of all of these factors or if none of them were in the minds of this generation.  What I do know is after this year of celebrations and acknowledgments I have concluded each generation drives a cultural shift in society and this generation of 50 something has certainly carved a new road ahead.

There are many commonalities among the people I know that are 50 something, those with children and those without.  The majority of them that are parents of pre-teen children and some have no children at all, that being a choice or other factor.  They are more concerned about the legacy they will leave for their children and their friend’s children and the generations to come than the legacy they are creating for themselves.  They seem perfectly secure in their financial situation regardless of where they fall on the economic or social spectrum.  They are committed to changing the world for the better and more concerned about global events and are willing to participate in activities that express the stabilization of world culture.  And last but not least every one of them are involved in some philanthropic cause that advocates social responsibility.  Has this new generation of 50 something’s driving the force of social change or has this always been the underlying case but in previous generations their voices were softer?  So I am not sure how they got there, maybe I just picked really great friends over the years and am extraordinarily blessed.  But this I do know without a doubt, as you move down the path of life embrace people of all ages and for those of you that have yet to reach this glorious milestone may you always have a: healthy and blessed Life, economic Liberty, in the Pursuit of …….50!

Silence …. the absence of sound

Throughout our daily lives there are many environments where we conduct ourselves in a silent manner.  We go about our daily routine and or interaction with society in the absence of sound.  In some cases we make a conscious choice to be silent and in other cases we move through our existence in a silent manner without choice.  There are instances where silence is interpreted as abstaining or being disinterested, however your communication is still perceived and interpreted.

Modern technology has created whole new ways of communication.  We text, we email, we direct message, we utilize social media, and we respond or not respond to all of these influences.  As a result we are automatically included in the conversation whether we remain silent or we speak out.  So the question is:  Do we make a sound with our silence?  Is being silent communicating? Do the recipients of the conversations in which we are automatically included as a result of creative technology effectively interpret that communication?  I have taken extreme interest in the intentional communication or lack thereof in social media.  Using Facebook as an example we are given multiple ways of participating in the conversation, but I point out that opting out of the conversation is not an option.  You have the opportunity to “Like” a posting, you have an opportunity to “comment” on a posting or you have the opportunity to ignore the posting.  All three of these options are a form of communication and though one may perceive that ignoring is not participating, it is not silent. 

Are we fearful of controversy or is it easier to just embrace happy.  How come Facebook postings with dogs and smiley faces get hundreds of “Likes” and a serious world issue or humanitarian crises can barely get a single “Like”? Do my friends feel by remaining silent on an issue is not communicating their opinion?  Do we think that not communicating our position absolves us from responsibility?  Most of us have heard the term “Silence is Golden” and when one is receiving information, watching a movie, listening to a speech, taking a test or evaluating a process this may very well apply.  But when one has been communicated with and uses silence as a response, your communication or intention can be horrifically misinterpreted.  In addition, through silence your position may be spoken for you and you may not be in agreement with the outcome.  By remaining silent your position may be interpreted as meaning in disagreement with what is being said when you actually might fully agree.  Is our silence a method to avoid the wrath of critics or opposing opinion?  Unfortunately this is an ineffective option as your critics will respond to your silence and choose your opinions for you.  Is our silence a method to hide our secrets, our innermost personal positions or the very core of who we are as human beings?  Again, our friends, our family, our acquaintances will define us if we choose not to define ourselves and they will judge us for who they have defined us to be and not who we are as we define ourselves.  Modern communication has reduced our ability to abstain from communication through silence.  The world continues to evolve toward a future where our participation is no longer optional but compulsory.  There is a world of people who are willing to not be silent for you, to express your thoughts and opinions for you and to influence the growth of society for you and through your silence you are communicating to them that you agree with their process.  Do not be silent in life, communicate your thoughts with an audible sound or action and be heard. Communicate your position, communicate your emotions, communicate and participate!  Every human being on this earth was given a voice or a method of communication, use it…….do not allow it to be used for you.  Communication is golden!  Silence……it’s the absence of sound.
